In the thirty years of my life, I have never had a friend or a loved one who died by suicide. Apart from a few acquaintances who attempted suicide, I have not witnessed the issue directly. So I should state that I am not writing my feelings and thoughts on suicide in the light of events that have caused me trauma. I am also aware that this article may have a negative effect on some people, and I must say, with my deepest sincerity, that if you think this subject will have a negative effect on you, please do not read this article at all and leave this page immediately.

In recent days, during a period in which I was experiencing various difficulties and negative circumstances, I developed some different thoughts on the matter of suicide. The reason I say different is that I realized I had never looked at this issue from this angle before. Although I am not someone trapped in religious or traditional patterns of thought, I cannot deny the fact that, because of my family, my background and the way I was raised, I have had more “normal” approaches to the subject of suicide. Still, it is worth saying this: I have never been interested in people’s choices or ways of life, as long as they do not harm others.

After these rather lengthy explanations, let us come to our main subject: suicide. The act of suicide appears as the result of a person’s desire to end their life for various reasons. These reasons may include mental illnesses, traumas, sometimes a sense of saturation, or simply no longer wanting to live; they may also include causes beyond the individual, such as social traumas, anxiety about the future, and economic difficulties. While the social dimension concerns reasons created by those who hold power, reasons for which we can directly blame them, we may also need to consider a kind of giving up that stems from the fragile nature of individual points of resistance. Since I am a political person, I am absolutely not in favor of blaming individuals on this issue, nor do I ever want to be such a person. To blame people who reject the ways of life imposed by governments through social engineering and who now feel alone requires, to put it mildly, a lack of reason.

Gel gelelim kişisel sebepleri olan insanlara… Her ne kadar kişisel sebep desem bile bu sebepleri ortaya çıkaran temel sorunu görmezden gelmemek adına şu ayrıma gitmeyi naçizane önemli buluyorum: Psikolojik rahatsızlıklar, travmalar veya duygusal zayıflıklar kişilerin suçu değil; onları buraya iten mekanizmaların; insanların, toplumların veya genetik kodların sonucudur! Nitekim sorunun temeli doğru analiz edilmedikçe yaşanılan her olumsuz olayı bireylerin omuzuna yükleyip onlara elveda diyerek hayatımıza devam etme yanlışı içerisine girebiliriz. Now let us come to people who have personal reasons. Although I call them personal reasons, I humbly find it important to make the following distinction so as not to ignore the fundamental problem that produces these reasons: psychological disorders, traumas, or emotional weaknesses are not the fault of individuals; they are the result of the mechanisms that push them to that point, of people, societies, or genetic codes. Indeed, unless the foundation of the problem is analyzed correctly, we may fall into the mistake of placing every negative event that occurs on the shoulders of individuals, saying goodbye to them and continuing with our lives. This makes us “passive” in a social sense and “useless” in an individual sense.

Up to this point in the article, I have tried to express my thoughts that the act of suicide is not something caused by individual weakness, and that it should generally be considered as a phenomenon rooted in family, environment, social mechanisms, economic perspectives, and even religious-ideological reactionism. However, I know that all of you are curious about my more extreme thoughts, the part that may be called the “tabloid” side of the issue. In that case, it is time to open Pandora’s box.

As you will appreciate, no human being comes into the world by choosing either their birth, the family they are born into, or the environment in which they will live. We are born as a result of our parents’ sexual activity and begin living within certain limitations. This lack of choice traumatizes especially those who, for various reasons, struggle to find common ground with their families. Of course, it is not only family; people who cannot fit in with society, the state, or the environment they are in are traumatized in the same way. This can lead some people to rebel, some to accept the situation indifferently, and some to give up. I truly admire people who find the strength to fight within themselves; but I know that this does not apply to everyone, and I believe this should not turn into an “accusation.”

In the final analysis, we face the fact that people do not have the freedom to choose the place, family, or environment into which they are born. After they are born, they also cannot freely choose the life they will live for long periods of time, because they remain dependent on family, society, or the state. While this situation turns some people into a cog in the system, it places others under serious emotional and mental strain. Sometimes people develop ways of struggling; at other times, they choose to disappear or to rid themselves of the responsibilities placed upon them. This is what I call “choicelessness.”

Human beings are free by nature and, like every living creature, naturally possess the right to choose. Ignoring human nature and attempting to change it through manipulative and artificial methods causes blockages in the system. As I have just said, some fight, some flee, and some give up. Can you blame those who flee or give up? What, in your view, is the price of forcing a person to do something they do not want?

Since the fundamental problem is “choicelessness,” suicide, perhaps as a last resort, appears as an option that no one can interfere with, prevent, or stand against without becoming completely helpless. The person who attempts suicide has now taken revenge on those who denied them the right to live and left them without choice. By striking their own death like a slap across the faces of those who think they can prevent everything and direct everything as they wish, they are now happy because, in the life in which they were left choiceless, they have made this choice, a choice that truly belongs to them and cannot be prevented by anyone. It is as if they have ended, in peace, a life that began in unrest. They no longer exist, and they will never exist again.

Please do not think that I am glorifying suicide in my final sentences; because, in my view, the act of suicide is an individual method of rebellion used by people who have no remedy left and who are forced to end their valuable lives because of oppression. The person who raises the flag of rebellion may not have wanted to take revenge on those who put them in a difficult position by ending their life; perhaps their death may even have been applauded by others, we cannot know. But we can see the fact that people who have been oppressed, humiliated, or forced throughout their lives to live lives they did not want still have not had the option of ending their lives by their own will taken away from them. I hope that everyone who has made such a difficult decision was able to spend the final minutes of their lives with this inner peace.

Yaşamayı seçme hürriyetimiz olmasa da yaşamamayı seçme hürriyetimizin olduğunu bilmek bana istemsiz bir huzur veriyor. Although we do not have the freedom to choose to live, knowing that we have the freedom to choose not to live gives me an involuntary sense of peace.
